Changes in Household Compositions and Regional Variations in Turkey
ÖZ
This study investigates changes in family and household compositions over time and current spatial differences with respect to rural-urban type of place of residence and NUTS- 1 regions in Turkey. Recent situation with regard to household compositions is derived from analysis of the 2008 Turkey Demographic and Health Survey. Household compositions are categorized into family types. Results show that the "nuclear family type" has always been the dominant family type in Turkey, yet also that the transition process from extended family households to nuclear and non-family households is an ongoing process. During this process, the proportions of nuclear families made up of a husband and wife with no children and single-person households have both increasedsubstantially. Nuclear families and non-family households are more common in the socioeconomically developed southern and western regions, as extended family households are more common in the less-developed northern and eastern regions.
